About The Speaker

Daina Basello

I grew up bilingual and was lucky to have had the opportunity to travel a lot starting from a very young age. So, multilingualism and multiculturalism have always been a part of my life. In 2017 I decided to study Applied Languages at the ZHAW in Winterthur and this July, I got my bachelor’s degree. During my studies multilingualism has become one of my biggest interests. I’m especially interested in the “life in-between two cultures”. I have written both my seminar paper and my bachelor thesis on bilingualism, more precisely on the language phenomenon code-switching. My studies also provided me with linguistic expertise, and I was introduced to the basics of translation. In addition, I dealt with oral communication in various contexts, improved my intercultural competence and learnt the basics of professional social media communication. I had the chance to coordinate several projects and events during my studies and to do an internship. I completed an internship in the language school DILIT in Rome where I performed a wide variety of tasks, including the translation of the school’s website. Because of my school career and my travels, I had the chance to meet many different people from all over the world. Therefore, I’ve acquired good social and language skills and became even more passionate about the different cultures and languages. In addition to the recently completed internship in Italy, I’ve also spent six months in the US and one month in Colombia. I speak German, Italian, English, Spanish and a little French. Right now, I’m looking for a job opportunity in translation and/or international relations. Besides that, I’m passionate about community work and committed to help other people however I can. I strive to change lives and people often tell me that I’m a dreamer, but I think that’s one of my best qualities.
